So to some I am currently in Sai Gon, to others I am in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).
According to one of the many guides I have come across in my time in Vietnam, the older generation still refer to it as Sai Gon, both the western and local silver-haired population. Those born in the 90’s and later have taken on the new name. I suppose I fit into the generation that has heard of it as Sai Gon but experienced it as HCMC.
I haven’t had enough time here to really enjoy the city especially since I have been trying to avoid being in the hustle and bustle for extended periods.
I have seen the night fall and the moon rising over the skyline of the city while sipping on a half price G&T from a rooftop bar. From up there the sounds of the city still filter through and it is exciting because I am removed yet a part of it.
I decided that one museum was my max and I chose the War Remnants Museum. It documents the Vietnam or American war through photographs and some old artillery, planes, tanks and helicopters. It is heavy going and I felt emotionally drained by the end. What I struggle with the most is the recklessness of war and how it can continue to impact the people for years to come. Many children born from my generation up to today have physical and mental defects due to the post-effects of agent orange.
A little peace for the soul was in order after the museum and this was restored by going to one of the many green parks that the locals relax in over lunchtime. This definitely sets HCMC apart from Hanoi, the greenery adds a different dimension and is such an asset. The lungs of the city.
A last look at the crazy traffic and the fascinating cargo that a tiny moped can carry, reminds me that I love the adventure of observing and experiencing a different culture.
Bye-bye Vietnam, off to Cambodia next…
