We hit the streets early yesterday morning to explore the different areas of BA. What we didn’t realise, is that Buenos Airians only start the day at about 10am. Life is slow paced. Also, seeing homeless people all over came as a bit of a surprise, especially how young they are.
First stop – La Boca. Old Italian immigrant area. Colourful houses, even more colourful characters. Here you can walk down the street and watch a couple dancing tango. And if you’re not careful, you’ll end up being convinced to take a photo with one of the dancers in poses that make you look like a koeksister. In Calle de Camenita the buildings are the artists pallett, a stark contrast to the grey harbour which was the lifeblood of this area.
This city is very green, with beautiful old trees lining the streets and parks with people lounging on benches or doing Jane Fonda exercises to Latin beats.
My favourite so far was San Telmo. Old mansions, cobble-stoned streets and beautiful courtyards. At Plaza de Dorego the atmosphere is buzzing with life. Artists selling their wares, patrons having a meal on the square and more beautiful trees reaching for the heavens. It reminded me of the square at Saccre Coeur in Paris.
