Cusco, capital of the Inca empire and rumoured city of gold.
A beautiful city of ancient days, fortified by breathtaking mountains and an unmistakable air of peace.
This city calms you down from the inside out. As you walk around, the atmosphere is buzzing yet the pace is slow. Perhaps it is because Cusco sits at 3330m above sea level and here you can’t walk fast without losing your breath.
Another unmistakable characteristic is the hospitality of the city. Everyone you meet, be it local or tourist, permeates the friendliness of this place. The local people aren’t rich but they seem content with life. Everyone has bright, white full tooth smiles. There are no beggars, even hawkers are gracious when you don’t want to buy their wares. The ladies walk around with their traditional bright garb, either burdens of coca leaf bundles or small children on their backs.
Around every corner is a new treasure to discover or a perfect photograph to be taken. Let me recommend the Cocoa Museum, serving chocolate delights for every palate. Sip on Mayan hot chocolate and watch the world walk by…literally. There is even the chance that the stones you sit on for a rest may be part of an Incan structure, it is that rich with history.
It is a technicolour dream of old and new and any visitor is sure to want more of the magic that is Cusco.
